Definition of Sanyasa: Nitya Sanyasi

Today even Sanyasa has become like an office work, one wears a dress, goes to a place and behaves in a particular way. What is the meaning of this word Sanyasa? Krishna has used a word Nitya Sanyasi नित्यसंन्यासी in the following Shloka.

ज्ञेयः स नित्यसंन्यासी यो न द्वेष्टि न काङ्क्षति ।
निर्द्वन्द्वो हि महाबाहो सुखं बन्धात्प्रमुच्यते ॥ गीता ५- ३॥

One meaning of this word Sanyasa is "to handle oneself in a proper way in any given situation". The word Nyasa means to deposit, to place, to keep. Shankara has given a special meaning to the word Sanyasa. सं + न्यास = संन्यास;  Saṁ + Nyāsa  = Saṁnyāsa, the prefix सं Saṁ here signifies wellbeing.

It means to keep the things in its best form and leaving it. One cannot leave just like that, he/she has to ensure everything is kept properly, every responsibility is duly taken care of and then handing over all of it to a right person who can continue to maintain it in the same way.

In Abhijna Shakuntala of Kalidasa, Shakuntala asks Kanwa rushi, I have grown up in this beautiful ashrama, now I am going to palace to stay with my husband, when is that I will come back here? For that Kanwa rushi answers, you are wife of a noble King of Chandra vamsha, you have to lead an ideal queen's life appropriate for Chandra vamsha, then give birth to a capable prince who can carry on the legacy, give good education to him and when he becomes mature enough, handover all your responsibilities to him, after which you can come back here to lead a peaceful life. This is what Sanyasa is; leaving it after having maintained it in the best possible way and then handing it over to a deserving person.

Definition of Sanyasa: Ashrama system

In this fifth chapter, the word Sanyasa is repeated many times. Today the word Sanyasa has become controversial with different interpretations from different people. Say for example, people make statements like, "Tendulkar has taken Sanyasa from Cricket". What is the meaning of Sanyasa? Is it an Ashrama? We have branded this Sanyasa with a dress code and an institutional barrier. Is it really so? What does Shastras say about it?

We have Ashrama system based on Psychological developmental stages of human beings. While young, children are curious to explore the world and learn about all those things they see around them. Shaishava, Balya and Kaumara put together is called as Brahmacharya Ashrama. Knowledge acquisition is the corner stone of this Ashrama.

According to ancient and modern psychology, a child should be under the parental care only for the first 8 years. During these 8 years, the child should grow under mother's care, where she corrects three doshas namely Kama Vada (speak what it likes), Kama Chara (do what it wants) and Kama Bhakshana (eat what it likes). Only mother can do this correction using her love and affection. This is called as Adhisheela shikshana. After 8 years, the child has to go to Gurukula and learn under the guidance of a Guru. Gurukula education is for 12 years after which the boy/girl naturally is in Yauvvana stage and enters into Grihasta Ashrama.

Grihasta Ashrama:
Grihasta Ashrama is the time when an individual leads a family life, performs all the duties of householder, earns resources in a righteous way, educates children, takes care of family and also the society. Grihasta is the backbone of society; this usually goes on till one attains 50-60 years. Karma is the corner stone in this Ashrama.

Vanaprastha Ashrama:
In Vanaprasta, Tapas is the key. Having entered Vanaprasta, one should lead a life without getting trapped in family chakra (chores). Mind should be redirected towards Tapas. When the time comes, one should leave this world without any attachment, with the help of Yoga. Nowadays, instead of Yoga, its Roga with which people leave this world.

* Brahmacharya Ashrama,
Jnana is the corner stone,
Gurukula is the domain, (8+12 years)
* Grihasta Ashrama,
Karma is the corner stone,
One's home itself is the domain, (usually ends around 50-60 years)
* Vanaprasta Ashrama,
Dhyana is the corner stone,
Punya kshetras are the domain, (till the death)
* Fourth one is Sanyasa,
Tapas is the key here,
there is no domain or time fixed for this.

Climax of Cognitive expansion

We call today's society a Knowledge society, we know Knowledge is power, but how do we get this Knowledge? How to accept Knowledge is power?

Commonly we believe that Knowledge is obtained by perception, by seeing, by hearing, by touching etc. Nyaya Shastras go one step further and define three connectivities, which are necessary to gain Knowledge. They are;

  • Connectivity between Vishya (object) and Indriya (sense organ)
  • Connectivity between Indriya (sense organ) and Manas (Mind / Intellect)
  • Connectivity between Manas (Mind / Intellect) and Atma (Consciousness)

Perception through sense organs is the first step, where in we sense the shape, size, color, texture, smell, taste, pitch, tone etc. to gain Knowledge about the object. After sensing, we correlate these inputs with our prior experience and use judgment to come to some sort of understanding. However, such Knowledge is always incomplete, because it is conditioned by prior experiences, limited to that particular place and that particular time. Such Knowledge is called as Savikalpa Jnana or Relative Knowledge which is obtained by first two connectivities and conditioned by three factors, Object, Place, and Time.

Knowledge which is beyond this subjectivity and conditioning is obtained only by elevating it to the level of Consciousness using the third connectivity. Such Knowledge is called - Pure Objective Knowledge or in other words Nirvikalpa Jnana. This process of elevation from relativistic level to pure and objective level is the true climax of cognitive expansion.

Modern Psychology cannot define this, since Atma is Supra clinical (beyond the capacity of clinical measurements). Having reached this Nirvikalpa Jnana state, there is no place for Samshaya doubting. In the very last Shloka of this chapter, Krishna is advising Arjuna to shun all doubts, cut the deep rooted ignorance with the sword of Jnana and to standup and perform his duties.

तस्मादज्ञानसंभूतं हृत्स्थं ज्ञानासिनात्मनः।
छित्त्वैनं संशयं योगमातिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ भारत॥गीता ४-४२॥

Cut the ignorance Ajnana with the sword of Jnana,
Reject doubting, establish yourself in Yoga and stand up.
